Project 2: Innovative Packaging
This is a group project that we design students have to collaborate with students from Food science and make a packaging for an innovative food product they are making.
Below is the presentation for the information about the High collagen instant noodles product that our collaborating group is working on.

The slides below are information regarding the product and product testing.

The task at hand for us design students is to come up with the packaging as well as the design elements and visual identity that comes along with the brand. So at first we had a discussion with out group members and the Food Science group. The food science group gave us a briefing on the product, the brand, its ideals and selling points. They had also created their own logo for the brand as well.

We then shared discussed with Mr.Shamsul to get a better understanding of the task we had to do and also ask for his suggestions. He suggested we redesign the whole image including logo, typography and other aspects and come up with a complete packaging. So we set up a moodboard.

We distributed tasks among our group members to find visual references, art styles and other materials that could help us come up with a good packaging. We also started doing sketches on the logo and packaging styles.
Brand Logo: Here are some of the sketches and design progressions of the logo. All of us agreed to use the first one on the left
After doing some final touches and colorisation, here is the final logo of the brand.

Art style: For the art style, we decided to go with an illustrated approach. Here are some of the references we used:

Colour: For the colour theme, we decided to use a separate colour palette for the brand from the flavours. We came up with a secondary colour palette for flavours which is to be applied on top of the primary brand colours.Figure 1.9: Typefaces - JPG / 20.05.2022
Packaging concept: After discussing ideas among both groups using visual references, we decided to go with a cup because that is the most popular and most ideal structure that we all agreed on.Die-line structure: We reviewed the designs of some popular cup noodles and discussed on the things we would follow and things we would change.

Figure 2.2: Packaging sketch - JPG / 20.05.2022
The first design that we came up with was a minimal illustrative design.
Figure 2.3: Packaging design progression- JPG / 20.05.2022
We tested the design on a mockup:Figure 2.4: Packaging design progression- JPG / 20.05.2022
From the comments we received, the design was too simple and does not give the feel of a noodles packaging. So we explored more and figured out the blue colour does not give off a feel that goes well with the product. We did some research and found out the same results so we decided to replace blue with a red shade as red was the more popular color on similar food products.
We did some more experimentations with colour.

We also discussed on having an illustration at the forefront of the design instead of the brand logo as the brand logo does not define the product. We wanted to see something that would immediately lead to recognising the contents. So we came up with some illustrations as well. Here is some more samples of the progression:

Illustrations: After working with some generic illustrations and feeling like it was better, we worked on designing our own illustration for the packaging. And since the food science students told us we only need one flavour, we decided to do the tomyum illustration. Here are the progression of the illustrations.Figure 2.8: Illustration sketch- JPG / 20.05.2022

After getting the right direction and making final changes, here is the final illustration:
Figure 2.9: Final illustration- JPG / 27.05.2022
So we applied the illustration on to the design and changed the colour according to the illustration and it seemed much better than before.Figure 3.0: design progress - JPG / 27.05.2022
We all liked the direction so we started creating the elements and labels needed. We also added a new fish scales pattern along with the noodles illustration below as a reference to collagen
Figure 3.1: texture design progress - JPG / 29.05.2022
We added all the necessary elements, labels and information as well as a guideline on how to cook the noodles.

After all the additions, here is how the final design looks like along with the die-line.

Mr.Shamsul approved the design so we made mockups using the packaging.

REFLECTIONS: Project 2 was a great experience collaborating with students from other schools. Working together simultaneously on different types of tasks were interesting and exciting. However we only had online meetings and discussions without physical interaction which sort made it somewhat difficult at times too. But I feel happy with the results and how things turned out. It was a great overall experience.
