WEEK 3 LECTURE: Repetition, Movement, Hierarchy and Alignment:

On this pre-recorded lecture by Dr. Jinchi, I learned more about these concepts of design.

  • Repetition: to make designs seem active and create rhythm and pattern within design work.
  • Movement: the way design leads the eye through the composition. arrangement of elements create movement.
  • Hierarchy: the choreography of content and elements in a composition to communicate through design. makes the viewer's eye follow elements in a way that is based on importance of content.
  • Alignment: placement of elements in a way that edges line up along common rows or columns. creates sense of unity.

EXERCISE:

1. Make sure you have TWO designs, one for repetition and one for movement.
2. Upload both designs in PDF file in your blog.
3. Send your blog link here.
4. Your blog must be in your actual name for easy identification. Make sure it has:
a) visual research
b) idea exploration
c) feedback from lecturer
d) final design outcome (pictures must neatly cropped and must not be shadowy/blur)
e) brief reflection for the week

1. Movement

Figure 1.0 Movement

For movement, I made this painting of a father and his son sitting at the edge of a valley looking into the distance. The idea was to bring their view and what they were seeing into the viewer's eyes by creating a movement that goes into the horizon. The tree-line gets smaller as it goes further and the shade gets lighter and lighter into the distance.

To achieve this look, I browsed images of valleys and trees to see how the silhouettes are created. The design was painted only using shades of green.

2. Repetition

For repetition, I wanted to make a minimal but colourful painting. So I did some idea exploration on pinterest.com and found some inspiration.

I used masking tape to paint the sun rays and a thick brush to paint the waves using very vibrant colours. The sun-rays and the waves are painted to create repetition within the design.

After getting feedback from Dr. Charles, I decided to remake my artwork on both Repetition and Movement as the feedback wasn't very well received and Dr.Charles said that the concept is not very well delivered. So here is my new versions for Movement and Repetition.

REFLECTIONS:

It's been a long while since I used a paintbrush or watercolour so it was a unique experience. Painting is always very unpredictable. I had no idea these were the ones I was gonna paint. I started with some ideas in mind but as the strokes go on they change and new ideas and colour variations happen unexpectedly throughout the whole process. But unlike before, painting the above images got me thinking more openly without any specific direction.
