Project 1: Happy meal design
For this project, we were instructed by Mr.Shamsul to design a happy meal packaging using a theme that creates awareness among children regarding a certain topic.
I did some research on different topics that I had in mind. I wanted to do something related to the sea.

After doing a background research, I decided to go with awareness on life of corals and sea-life that are in danger due to effects of global warming.
From the research, I found that the number of coral bleaching events due to extreme heat waves are increasing year by year in a very serious level which is putting the survival of millions of sea-life in danger without people realising much as it all happens under water.
So I wanted to use a cartoon styled illustrations of happy underwater life while also giving messages of awareness regarding the threats against these beautiful creatures.
I did some more research on art styles and underwater illustrations to find visual references for the artworks I wanted to create.
Below it some of those references:

Figure 1.8: Packaging reference / die-line- JPG / 25.05.2022
I found the general die-line for the happy meal packaging to be a bit bland so I decided to make it interesting. I added the coral layer separately above the main artwork so that it would go outside the box-cut and would appear more lifelike.
Also for the handle, I drew two coral branches on both sides attached to make up a nice looking handle.

After getting everything the way I wanted to, I arranged the elements in the die-line.

I put the messages on the front and back of the french-fries porch and also included a separate design for a game card puzzle that has words and names related to sea-life and global warming.
Finally, I made mock-ups to show how the final product would look like.

FEEDBACK:
Week 5: Coral bleaching topic is a good idea. Make sure to get good references .
Week 6: Maybe include an additional play card or information booklet regarding the topic. Can make layers sticking out of the box as well.
Week 8: The design looks interesting.
Reflections:
This was a very fun project to work on. Especially because it was a product for kids and I love colourful illustrations, I wanted to explore and experiment with illustrations and I am very happy with the results of the artwork as well as the overall look of the final packaging. It felt aesthetic and happy as well as very life-like which I think was important for the purpose of the packaging.
