INSTRUCTIONS:

TASK 3A: BOOK
Task 3A consists of the final works for the book that I created content and visuals for. For this task, we were instructed to design the book with the content and visuals with the aid of previously designed type specimen sheet and grid systems.

TYPE SPECIMEN SHEET:
Here is the type specimen sheet that I created and followed through the book design. I wanted to use ITC Garamond because it's a serif typeface that is easy to read and has modern features as well while looking overall traditional similar to the concept of Lord of the rings.

I used 4 columns per page and got inspiration from the Van De Graff to create a similar looking border without keeping strictly to the grid dimensions due to the custom size of the document.

For the cover page illustration, I used the map design that I illustrated for the book since that was my favourite piece among the artworks. I used my second favourite sword artwork for the back cover. As for the title of the book, I kept constant to the title style in the contents as well.

CONTENT PAGES DESIGN:
For the contents, I followed the grid structure and type specimen sheet. The main work went into setting the visuals in good order and dimensions. I managed to get a result that I was happy with.

Before printing the book, I did a test print to check how the final printing would turn up. I was happy with the use of type, colour intensity, grids and dimensions.
For the printing, we were suggested by Mr.Vinod to choose paper that is thicker than 70gsm. After getting the test print and discussing with the print-shop, I printed the book on the following settings and materials:
Dimensions: 190 x 220 mm
Cover page material: Maple bright white 250gsm (Matte)
Contents page material: Book paper 80gsm

FEEDBACK:
General Feedback: Mr.Vinod suggested us not to use display typefaces for the body text.
Specific Feedback: Looks good. Can proceed with the remaining tasks.
WEEK 7:
General Feedback: Complete the book layout
Specific Feedback: Illustrations are good. Complete the blog posts
WEEK 9:
General Feedback: Complete the book layout in two days
Specific Feedback: Make the title composition consistent. Work faster. At least 32 pages apart from cover page should be included
WEEK 10:
General Feedback: Need to work fast and complete all the tasks on time.
Specific Feedback: Do a test print before the final print
REFLECTIONS:
EXPERIENCE: The book design from beginning of the designing to the final print work was challenging and exciting. The time frame to do the work along with assignments from other modules was very hectic and difficult to keep up with. But when I got the final print on hand and seeing the result, I was very much satisfied with the work.
OBSERVATIONS: My favourite part of the task was how the illustrations turned up in the layouts. I was glad I didn't scan the artworks flat as I was initially planning to do. Instead I photographed the artworks in different angles with lens blur included and the results turned out much better than i expected.
FINDINGS: I found the difference between designing with type digitally compared to design on print. The results on paper texture has a very aesthetic feel to it especially when the design is of my own making. I am looking forward to more printing design works in the future.
