TASK 4: Brand Guideline

This task is a collaborative assignment from both Brand Corporate Identities and Publishing design. We were instructed to design an interactive brand for the brand that we created for the previous assignment for BCI. The instructions were to create a single page document with all the information organised for an easy viewing experience using hyperlinks.

IDEA EXPLORATION:

The brand that I had created previously was called Walnut Woodshop which is a carpentry workshop that specialises in walnut wood. The visual idea of the brand is a modernised aesthetic of vintage art related to carpentry, dark woods and related styles.

The typeface that I chose for the brand was Acumin Variable Concept. The reason I chose Acumin was to make a cleaner design to the textual content to give focus to the visuals and imagery at the same time keeping the layout simpler and consistent. Below are some of the visual references that I referred to when I was designing the concept.

CONCEPT & LAYOUT:

As mentioned before, the choice of typeface was inspired by the idea of keeping the layout cleaner and easier to read and navigate through. The first task for designing was to come up with a grid system. Mr.Vinod suggested us to come up with 3 different grid systems. Below is the 3 grid concepts that I came up with.

Figure 1.3 - Grid system 1 - PDF / 11.06.2022

Figure 1.4 - Grid system 2 - PDF / 11.06.2022

Figure 1.5 - Grid system 3 - PDF / 11.06.2022

After weekly feedback, I did make some additional changes to the concept.

The general concept I was going for was a left-side navigation bar with one column for textual information and another one column for visual information. For the type, Mr.Vinod suggested us not to go below 20pt size for any text and to use a body typeface for the body text even though titles have a different style. I had previously decided to use only Acumin typeface for all the titles and body text with bold weights for titles. However, after some experimentation, I changed the titles to a thinner weight than body text later because it felt more appealing and relevant to the style.

Below is the final concept and type style I used for the brand guideline.

Figure 1.6 - Grid system 4 - PDF / 11.06.2022

Body text: Acumin variable concept (Regular) 20 pt with a linespacing of 24 pt.

Titles: Acumin variable concept (thin) 48 pt

Chapter title: Acumin variable concept (thin) 30 pt

NAVIGATION:

When it came to the navigations, there were lots of options regarding the style and manner to carry out the navigation consistently. The most effective option that I found was a navigation bar to have all the guiding navigations in one place.  I went online to see some visual ideas and below is one of them.

Figure 2.0 - Navigation bar reference - JPG / 14.06.2022

I liked the side-bar approach as it kept the body space clean when scrolling up and down  through the document. I used a similar style but changed the orientation of the texts to vertical to occupy as little space to the navigation bar and give more space to the body columns.

When I showed my navigation bar concept to Ms.Lilian and Mr.Vinod, they gave me some feedback on the design. Mr.Vinod suggested I give more space to the next/previous buttons as they were too close, and Ms.Lilian asked me to check the logo to see if fits the minimum size.

Figure 2.1 - Navigation bar progress - JPG / 14.06.2022

I found out it was actually smaller than the required minimum size but enlarging the logo occupies more space for the navigation bar. Ms.Lilian suggested the idea of rotating the logo similar to the texts in the navigation bar so it would not occupy more space. After getting the feedback, I made some changes. Below is the before and after sample of the navigation bar.

Figure 2.2 - Navigation bar before and after - JPG / 14.06.2022

After finalising the navigation bar, I then created the contents page. For the content page, I left a lot of empty space except for the 3 columns of content.  After making the contents page and the relevant pages for the target content, I tested how buttons work in a separate Indesign file. Below is the test button pdf.

 Figure 2.3- Navigation bar test - PDF / 15.06.2022

After learning how to make buttons and links, I made the navigation buttons on the navigation bar on the parent page followed by the content page.

 Figure 2.4 - contents page buttons - JPG / 15.06.2022

I also created buttons on the last page for external links for brand's website and other social media links. Moreover, I created buttons of the subsections for the individual section title pages.

CONTENT AND DESIGN:

As I was progressing through the design I began adding the content and visuals to relevant pages. Below is a progression update.

NOTE: Since the progress updates on each design section is documented separately here, the final updates on different sections  might not be applied to the progression of the next sections.

 Figure 2.6 - progress update - PDF / 20.06.2022

 Figure 2.7 - progress update - PDF / 20.06.2022

The feedback that I received after showing the design to Mr.Vinod and Ms.Lilian was that the concept is too consistent that makes the design get boring after a while. Ms.Lilian suggested I mix up the layout styles to make it more interesting. With this feedback, I started changing the layout from one sided to two sides and full screen visuals. Below is the progression afterwards.

 Figure 2.8 - progress update - PDF / 21.06.2022

Ms.Lilian also suggested that I come up with new collaterals and applications since the collaterals on the previous task was not very interesting.

So I made some new designs and changed the style of the applications and collaterals for the brand guideline.

FEEDBACK:

Week 10:
Mr.Vinod (Publishing Design): Make the point sizes suitable. Finalise grids and concept.

Week 11:
Ms.Lilian (Brand Corporate Identity): The design is too consistent and gets boring after viewing for some time. Make the layout more interesting.
Mr.Vinod (Publishing Design): Change up the layout into more interesting formations.

Week 12:
Ms.Lilian (Brand Corporate Identity): Logo on navigation bar needs to follow minimum size.

Week 13:
Ms.Lilian (Brand Corporate Identity): The collaterals on the previous assignment can be better. Explore and try to redesign collaterals for brand guide.
Mr.Vinod (Publishing Design): Concept and layout is better. Import all the content.

REFLECTION

EXPERIENCE: This task felt very rushed as I missed the introduction class and by the second class of Mr.Vinod, the progress was not updated and I had to adjust to the timeframe. It was interesting to learn about designing interactive documents and how to organise layouts and concepts into a more visually structured and easy reading experience.

OBSERVATION: Keeping up with classes and progress updates is really very important and its also important not to procrastinate and waste free time. I managed to get all my tasks done but keeping the work until later adds to a lot of stress to manage time.

FINDINGS: I found interactive documents similar to UIUX in many ways. I love how different styles of interactivity makes content seem more organised for the viewer as well as the creator in keeping up with the information and navigate throughout the document or canvas.
