TASK 2: Content Generation

We were instructed to come up with a story of 3000 words for our publishing design project. The story could come from ourselves or from another source. I started writing a story and wrote half of the word limit but eventually changed my mind due to the time limitations. I later decided to use a story from the Lord of the Rings instead. We were instructed to design / illustrate for the story as well and since Lord of the rings was something I was interested in making illustrations for, I decided to use the first chapter of the Lord of the Ring (Concerning Hobbits) as it is within the word limit and can be a brief story told apart from the actual story.

Rationale:

Concerning Hobbits is a chapter from J.R.R Tolkien's book The Lord of the Rings, that explains the history and culture of the hobbits, a half-ling mortal race from the fictional world Middle Earth. Hobbits live simple lives living in small homes built inside holes in their small villages and stay away the world of the big-folk as they call it. In the world of the middle-earth ruled by men, elves, dwarves and other creatures, hobbits are merely known to exist. However a handful of hobbits get involved in events that changes the history of all Middle-Earth in the following chapters of the book.

ILLUSTRATIONS

We were expected to come up with 16 illustrations. My initial idea was to make digital illustrations. I did some research on the illustrations based on lord of the rings and the original Tolkien drawings. I was then convinced I wanted to make actual drawings on paper.

I had previously done doodles on coffee-inked paper which turned out looking very old and worn out at the same time stylish so I though I would go for something like that. I first tested the style using a Map of the middle earth as inspiration.

I was happy with the result and decided to stick with the art style for the 16 illustrations. I started working on the first artwork which is the Map of the Middle Earth.

The process was to first use pencils to draw the grid and structure, and then to draw using different sizes of drawing pens. After the ink drawing was complete, the artwork is painted using coffee.

Different drawing and inking techniques were used in different artworks but the process is similar.

I decided to go for a photo graphic method to scan the artworks instead of normal scans. as I thought it would be more interesting. I took photos from different angles including focus blurs to make the final work look a little unique. I used square crop for the time being which will later be changed when applying the artworks on the book layout.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 2:

GENERAL FEEDBACK: Can divide illustrations instead of making 16 different illustrations

SPECIFIC FEEDBACK: Artwork is good

WEEK 3:

GENERAL FEEDBACK: Maintain theme and consistency

SPECIFIC FEEDBACK: Artworks are consistent. Can proceed with the remaining ones.

WEEK 5:

GENERAL FEEDBACK: Complete the exercises. Decide on grid systems and typography for final book design

SPECIFIC FEEDBACK: Scan / digitise artworks. Can proceed

REFLECTION

EXPERIENCE: At the beginning we were told to write or find a story online that would meet the word count of 3000 words. I tried to write one but it was taking too long and we had very limited time. So I decided to use a chapter from the lord of the rings. It was partly because I wanted to make the illustrations based on Lord of the rings. Making the illustrations was fun and I learned a lot of techniques of drawing with ink and coffee. I did traditional map drawing for the artworks and saw some very cool websites and pages that taught me a lot about the art form

OBSERVATIONS: I found that the use of typography and grid systems is as important visually as the illustrations in terms of displaying content to a viewer when it comes to textual content. The typefaces and styles used could make or break a book design regardless of how good other elements are.

FINDINGS: I learnt a lot about different styles of drawing and illustrating as well as the different tools used. I also found a great deal about traditional and vintage drawings that could be modified into creating very interesting visuals.
