Exercise 1: Packaging design case study
For the first exercise, we were briefed by Mr.Shamsul to find a physical packaging design to be studied for its design and other properties. We were instructed to research about the brand and the specific product, its purpose and needs, packaging concept, design elements...etc. We were told to bring the packaging to the class next week.
After class I went to a supermarket to look for a packaging that I like. I found a box of biscuits that I found interesting and I took it to class. Mr.Shamsul said it was too simple and of low quality print and suggested I find another.
So for the next class, I bought a new product that was a cookie box from Bread History which was made especially for the Aidilfitri celebrations.
I liked the simple and elegant design style which very much reflected the vibe of Aidalfitri celebrations while also showing the product in a mosque-styled transparent frame.
So I brought it home and made a light-box-ish setup and took some photos of the package from different angles. After that I deconstructed the box and took flat-lay photos of whole design die-line.

After getting all the visuals from the packaging, I went online to do some
research. I came across the social media platforms of the brand where I found
their website as well. From there I got materials and information regarding
the brand and product.
After the research, I attempted to design the die-line of the packaging. It
was a slightly complex die-line which made up to a very interesting
packaging.

After designing the die-line, I created the presentation using the information and elements from the research.

Exercise 2: Box making
For the second exercise, we were instructed to find two random objects within specific size limits to make packaging boxes for. We were asked to come up with sketches before starting physical box making.
I looked for interesting items and decided to go with a French-press jar and a WD external hard drive.

For the french press, I came up with 11 sketches. I tried some experimental designs while keeping in mind how it can be physically made. I showed the sketches to Mr.Shamsul and he gave me some ideas and recommended the 8th idea.

After making sure the die-line is accurate, I went and bought two kinds of paper, Thick card-board paper for the interior structure and the thick glossy-art paper for the outside box. It was difficult to cut the pieces and put them in place because I used a lock-in method instead of glueing. The cardboard paper was very stiff so any bend were damaging the paper. But I managed to get it in place with some minor damages.

The outside box however was much easier to make although the first one didn't fit the structure so I had to redo another box. Here is the final box and inside structure with the french press inside.

Item 2: Hard Disk
For the second item; the external hard disk, I made 12 sketches with some experimental designs. I showed them to Mr.Shamsul and he said he really liked the 7th one. It was tricky but I decided to give it a try. However, the design of the outline of letter D seemed too complex so I just went with the shape of the letter D.

I did some research on similar die-lines and designed a proper die-line that could work on the design accurately.

After designing the die-line, I attempted to make the boxes physically but this time only using the glossy paper. The box was also more complex than I thought and it took several attempts to get it done properly.

I made the outside box and inside drawer separately. Here is the box and drawer with the hard disk inside.

Submission
Here is the final submission for the presentation of both box designs.

Feedback:
Week 2: The box chosen is too simple and with low quality print. Need another packaging.
Week 3: Choice of packaging works. Find 2 items for box making
Week 4; The sketches are very good. Preferably 8th design from French press sketches and 7th design from Hard disk sketches can be used for box making.
Reflections:
The exercises were really fun and exciting to experiment on. I had never worked on a packaging before and it was interesting to experiment on the design part as well as physical box making. Learned a lot from both aspects of how digital designs are applied to physical products.
