INSTRUCTIONS:
LECTURES:
Week 9: Ms.Anis was on sick leave this week so she had a recorded lecture on TIMES. The lecture was regarding Project 3. Before the project 3 instructions, we were updated on our project 1 marks. I recieved 19/20 from the total 4 parts of Project 1. I felt very happy about my results.Regarding Project 3, we are supposed to publish a comic using WEBTOON.COM. For that we need to create a Webtoon account and start creating our Comic. The comic has to be 10 to 20 panels of 1280x800 pixels where we have to plan out and design our story.
The structure of the comic has to have these components,
- Introduction
- Middle-part
- Ending
- Central theme
- Minor theme
- Conflict
- Characters (Protagonist / Antagonist)
On the tutorial session, Mr.Kanaan gave feedback for some of the Project 2 works by my peers and demonstrated on how to improve those works. He also demonstrated on how to export those illustrator art-boards to aftereffects and animate them.
WEEK 10: On this week's lecture, Ms.Anis introduced us to motion comics and how to structure them. This week was mainly focused on Panels and artboard flow of the panels to create the story hierarchy. She described in detail about the gutter spaces and transitional styles in moment-to-moment transitions, scene to scene transitions and aspect to aspect transitions. Also she talked about rolling transitions, use of symbolism and non-sequitor or abstract ideas. After the lecture we listened to some of the stories by my peers and Ms.Anis gave feedback and suggestions.
Here are the instructions and some additional material provided to help
us make the comic.
On the tutorial session by Mr.Kanaa, we learned After Effects and how to animate comics. He showed us various different styles and tools of transitions and effects and how to achieve them in AfterEffects.

PROJECT 3: MOTION COMIC
My storyline:
On a beautiful sunny day, a fisherman named Ali went fishing in
his little sailboat. He brought his daughter Laya along with him
to the beach to watch him fish near the island. Laya sat under a
palm tree in the beach as Ali sailed to the edge of the
reef.
As Laya sat there, she felt a bit sleepy as she was watching her father struggling to catch any fish for. After a long and disappointing while of not being able to catch any, Ali picks up his sea telescope from his toolbox to look for any signs of fish in the surrounding area. He notices birds hovering a little far from the island and saw splashes in the sea.
Ali immediately took off in his boat and sailed as fast as he could. When he reached the spot, he found fishes jumping out of the water everywhere. He threw his fishing line into the water hoping for a good catch. But to his surprise all the fish suddenly disappeared as something very huge and strange got caught on his line. Ali was unable to move his line any bit closer. He noticed the sea around his boat got darker as whatever was caught on the line came closer.
Ali was mortified when a giant tentacle rose up from the water with his line and hook followed by more giant tentacles. A huge sea-monster surfaced. It clutched on Ali and started breaking up his sailboat before Ali could move a muscle.Laya woke up from her dream terrified. She looked around for her father but couldn't find him. Fear caught her heart but then she heard a whistle. She looked behind her Laya saw her father walking to her from the other side empty-handed. Laya felt relieved. She ran towards Ali who was disappointed after not catching any fish but Laya didn't care about the fish.
Visual research:
I did a lot of online research to understand drawing people for comic and other parts of the comic. Drawing characters and emotions in comic has a unique and unrealistic style to express the ideas and expressions more clearly and dramatically. After characters, I looked for references do portray island beaches and sailboats. I chose to base the story in my home country (Maldives).
DESIGN:
After getting references from internet, I started sketching the ideas on ClipStudio Paint. On week 11, I sketched the storyboard on ClipStudio and showed it to Miss Anis.
Even though I did the sketches digitally, when it came to designing the actual comic, I had some struggles with the sketch. I found it difficult to go back and forth to make changes on both sketch file and Illustrator file. So I decided to sketch on paper which was much more effective. I taped some papers on the wall next to me as artboard and sketched on each artboard separately. This way if I didn't like a part, I could do exactly what I wanted with it. Basics are always better, I found.

CHARACTERS:
Illustrating seem very complicated at first but
gets easier when you get the hang of it.
Even the colours had to be changed to make some elements stand out more prominent than the others without making the colours too vibrant or out of place.

WEB-TOON:
After making the comic episodes and thumbnails, I published my first comic on WebToon.LINK: https://www.webtoons.com/en/challenge/a-fishy-dream/list?title_no=660580

FEEDBACK:
Week 9: I showed My storyline to Ms. Anis and she told me to make the story more dramatic than it is by suggesting me to add the sea-monster event maybe. She said it's ok to add some tension even though it is supposed to be feel-good at the end.
Week 10-15: INDEPENDENT LEARNING WEEKS
Week 13: I sent some sketches to Mr.Kanaan and he said the designs are looking good. He suggested me to think of overlays and polishing after finishing the main designs.
Week 15: I showed My final comic to Ms.Anis. She said it is a nice story without captions and said it was a good work. I asked her for some suggestions on making the expressions more apparent and she gave me some ideas that I latter incorporated to the expressions on my comic.
