INSTRUCTIONS:

LECTURES:

WEEK 6:
We didn't have any lecture this week but we were briefed of our project 2 (Decisive Moment).
For this project we are supposed to create a unique design for a movie poster. The poster must be a minimalistic design of 800x600 (600x800) pixels with a GIF loop and documentation.

WEEK 7: Hari Raya Week
Although it is Hari Raya break, we were updated on TiMes about our project. Here is the Exercise notes:

WEEK 8: Independent Learning Week

WEEK 9: Ms.Anis was absent for today's class so we only had a feedback session by Mr.Kanaan. He demonstrated to us how to make our posters better and gave tips on doing the animation.

PROJECT 2 - DECISIVE MOMENT

I did some thinking about the ideas for project 2 and sketched some on my sketchbook. Here are 3 sketches I did. The first one is from the movie Prestige by Christopher Nolan. The sketch shows a bird in a cage, a prop used throughout the movie to show the process of magic, good and ugly, sort of sums up the whole movie. The second sketch shows a scene from Taika Waititi's Thor Ragnarok where the character Thor rises up from all his defeats to finally become the God of Thunder backed by the awesome Led Zeppelin's Immigrant song (gives me chills every time). The 3rd one is also from the same scene. I told Ms.Anis about my idea of using Thor's God of Thunder scene for my project and she approved it.

Since the task was to create a minimalistic movie poster on a 600x800 px, I decided to go with a portrait poster. So I downloaded some high resolution image from the scene for reference.

Figure 1.0.2 : Thor Ragnarok reference image 2 - 26th May 2021

After importing the reference images to Adobe Illustrator, I placed the images on the 600x800px artboard to figure out a good composition. Since the poster is supposed to be a minimalistic one, I only focused on the area where the superhero landing of Thor was going to happen in front of the army of the dead.

Figure 1.0.3 : Sketching Thor - 26th May 2021

After setting a decent composition in my head, I started drawing the figure of Thor. I wanted the elements in the foreground to look like a silhouettes. Since the artwork need to be animated, I drew Thor in segments to later animate such as his legs, body and cape.

With the additional images and elements, the composition needed to be adjusted once a while doing the poster.

After drawing the foreground elements, using the second reference image, I drew the figure of Asgard on the background.

After drawing all the elements, I used adobe colour website to generate some colours that would look good on thor and the elements. After that I put gradients on background layers and coloured the individual elements.

After colouring the poster, I was happy with the result. The remaining part is to draw the lightening bolts behind thor and lighting him up as the main focus of the scene.

After final adjustments I made the art-boards for the GIF frames and exported to Photoshop to make the final GIF.

FINAL GIF SUBMISSION:

SUMMARY: After losing his father Odin, and losing the fight to save Asgard and it's people, and getting his hammer "Mjolnir" destroyed during the defeat, Thor returns to save Asgard and it's people from his evil sister Hela to be once again defeated without the power of his hammer. But in his last moments of defeat, he sees a vision of Odin coming back to tell him that his powers never came from his hammer but from Thor himself. After the revelation, Thor finally embraces the power within him and become the God of Thunder to defeat Hela and single-handedly face the army of the dead.

FEEDBACK:

WEEK 6: I asked Ms.Anis for the idea for my poster as the God of Thunder scene from Thor: Ragnarok and Ms.Anis approved and said that I could begin working on it.

WEEK 7 & 8:
Hari Raya & Independant learning week

WEEK 9:
I couldn't show my work progress on class as I wasn't happy with my progress back then and also because Ms.Anis was on leave on that class day. But after finishing my work, I showed it to Ms.Anis and she told me it looks good.

REFLECTION:

I really enjoyed project 2 as it was something I always wanted to do to make minimalist posters. Especially movies. It was going pretty normal at first but when I started giving colour to the artwork everything was coming really well and I loved the whole process. I feel like I could make it much better if I spend more time on animating little bits of it but I am very happy with the result. Also it is supposed to be minimalistic so I feel like there is a decent amount of detailing in this and more detailing might lose the minimalism.
