WEEK 9 - WEEK 14
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY & IMAGING GCD 61204
NAME: HUSSAIN WAHEEDH
I.D: 0344802
COURSE: Bachelor of Design (hons) in creative media
GROUP: A
INSTRUCTIONS:
WEEK 9: On this week's class, we were introduced to animation and Adobe After
Effects. After Effects is a highly advanced 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects and motion picture compositing. We were shown tutorials on how to animate digital collages in
after effects and how to apply various different effects to animate
and make a video. On the tutorial class, we were demonstrated on how to do pre-compositions on photoshop and importing them on to After Effects for animation and post production.
WEEK 10: This week's lecture is about Digital Photography. The lecture explained the elements of Photography;
WEEK 11: This week's lecture talked about Double exposure. Double exposure photography is to have multiple images merged as one. This can be done on some cameras as well as digitally using softwares. Some of the styles of double exposure include
WEEK 10: This week's lecture is about Digital Photography. The lecture explained the elements of Photography;
- Exposure: The amount of light in a photo / eg. under exposed / over exposed
- Shutter speed: The duration of the opening of the lens / shutter / eg. 1/2000s, 20s...
- Aperture: The size of the shutter opening through the lens / eg. f2.8, f4.5
- ISO: Light sensitivity eg. ISO 200, ISO 400...
- Lens: Different focal lengths using different distanced optical glasses / eg. Zoom, Wide, Fisheye...
- Focal length: Distance in mm between centre of the sensor to the middle of the lens
- Depth of field: The part of the photo in focus
WEEK 11: This week's lecture talked about Double exposure. Double exposure photography is to have multiple images merged as one. This can be done on some cameras as well as digitally using softwares. Some of the styles of double exposure include
- Tilt-shift: Blur one photo
- Fake-reflection: create reflections using different layers/photos
- Portrait-texture experiments
- Black and white
- Experiment with silhouettes
- Random photo merging
EXERCISE: WEEK 9
The exercise for this week is to animate a pre-composited photoshop document in After Effects.
I followed Sir Fauzi's tutorials step-by-step to import the PSD file to
After effects and then animate each PSD layer in a different way to
create the story video.

WEEK 10: For this week, we had to develop ideas and references as well as give details about our design brief. What I wanted to show in my design was what I've experienced from being close to the ocean and interacting in activities such as snorkelling and diving which relieves us from the overwhelming complexities of the outside world and gives one a complete escape from literally everything. I wanted to show that visually using photos of my own and some from various sources. Here are some reference ideas I looked up from pinterest:

Using the ideas and references, I drew a simple sketch of how I wanted my composition to look like:
WEEK 11: On week 11, I started my digital composition on Adobe Photoshop using a photo of mine a friend took while snorkelling. I also used some images of textures, backgrounds, and objects from online as additional elements in my design. Here is the image:

I did my typography using Adobe Illustrator. I made a circular line of text repeating the word "escape" to go on the border of the broken clock.

I did some colour adjustments before finishing off with the Final poster composition.
FINAL POSTER:

After finalising the poster, I exported the PSD and imported in on Adobe AfterEffects to animate it into a video. I spent around a few hours on AfterEffects animating each layer and fixing everything to look how I had planned to. The video and poster was inspired by the movie Inception by Christopher Nolan which explores dreams and how time works differently in dreams. I took the idea of that to make the upper side of the poster where the fast-paced city life happens move much faster and the underwater part much slower. To compile everything in this idea, I used the soundtrack of the movie Inception by legendary composer Hans Zimmer.
I finished animating all the layers and exported the video.
I had to use Adobe Premier Pro to resize the video because the file size was too large. I resized and uploaded the video on YouTube.

After I uploaded the video, I showed it to Mr.Fauzi during class for feedback. He said the mood of the video, the music and animation was good and suggested me to darken the intro shot to make the light-up more interesting. I took his advice and changed the opening. I also felt that the clock movement was out of proportion in terms of the flow of the video and music so I changed it to make one rotation and meet at 00 before every piano note from the music. After doing that, everything seemed very neat. Here is my final Video:

FEEDBACK:
WEEK 9: Mr.Fauzi said the work is good and the e-portfolio has good reference. And regarding rendering, he said we can export to any format that we like as long as the file is not too huge. Quicktime and mp4.
WEEK 11: Mr.Fauzi said that my idea was good and that I can begin with the digital composition
WEEK 12: Mr. Fauzi gave feedback for my design. He gave some good tips on how to animate the clock, cityscape and other layers. He said the composition was good.
WEEK 13: I showed my first video to Mr.Fauzi and he said the mood, music and animations were all good. He suggested that I darken the opening of the video to make the scene more interesting.
REFLECTION: This was the first time I used Adobe AfterEffects and explored into it. It seemed very tough earlier so I never attempted making animations but during this assignment I learnt that it was very straightforward and has a very wide range of tools that can be used to make really advanced stuff. I felt very happy to have had to do this assignment because it taught me a whole different medium of multimedia and a huge one at that. Considering the fact that it was my first attempt, I felt very happy with my first video animation.
