PROJECT 2B - POSTER DESIGN

On this week, we were briefed about Project 2. Project 2 consists of two parts, Project 2A and Project 2B. Firstly, we began our work for project 2B (Poster Design). For that we were given a form to fill each segment weekly until submission.

The topic for poster design is Refugees in Malaysia. And we were told to research on the topic for information and reference and put them on the mood-board provided. Here is the images I downloaded from pinterest as my reference for my poster.

After references, we were then to break down the research and write about the specific details needed for the poster. I went online and did some research about the Refugee issue in Malaysia. Since I haven't been to Malaysia, there were lots of things I needed to catch up on. I read articles and news websites as well as columns in organisations such as UNICEF to get an idea of the situation. From my readings, I noticed that there were children who aren't allowed to study due to beliefs in their parents regarding the importance of education. This was something that caught my eye among the many issues that are happening with refugees. I believe that no child should be denied the opportunity to study and build their futures. So after some research, I decided to go forward with this route and make a poster on awaring these parents and communities and change their views about child education.
Here's the information I wrote on the moodboard:

I was pretty convinced about the topic for my poster because even though there are lots of issues in general that many others would find the need to push forward, child education is as important or maybe even more important than the others to have some hope for the future of these communities. So further on I filled the details in the mood-board title section.

Here is the full exercise sheet I submitted:

After the break down, I started sketching my poster and mockups. I used a photo I took a year back in Kathmandu Nepal of a little girl living under very poor conditions to give the idea of the conditions of a refugee kid since I haven't been to a refugee camp. (Might not be accurate to the situation in Malaysia)

Figure 1.1.3 - Kid photo

I used the above photo as my main poster element. I try to keep everything minimal in my works because they tend to look more professional and aesthetic but for that the few elements must be strong enough and make a good impression on the viewer. I found this picture had such a prominence. After finalising the photo, I placed it on to photoshop and started layering how I wanted the poster to look like (Mock-ups and stuff). I sliced the whole canvas to two from diagonal corners and painted blue and red on both sides. I did that to give a sense of choice. Here is how the overall mockup looks like.

Figure 1.1.4 Mockup

After creating the mockup I hid the mockup layers and started applying texts and effects to the photo. I chose a heavy Montserrat font for the title and a lighter version of the font as the remaining texts

Figure 1.1.5 Applying texts

Personally, I would always prefer black and white over colour images because I feel like colour is a way of decoration on an already good-looking elements. A lot of times, looking on an image without colour tells a lot of stories that are outshined because of colour. Black and White images only show you what you need to see. So I went with a black and white look for the Photo and I would add the red, blue layers later.

After I was happy with the direction of my mockup and sketch I began work on the poster.
I placed the red/blue layers on top of the photo and created a mask of the child to bring her in-front of the blues and reds.

I placed the texts for the slogan and call for action as well. The slogan felt better near the title rather than on the bottom. The reds and blues also made way for clearer texts which was sort of like a bonus.
The call for action was meant for more details so the idea was to have a website behind this endeavour. So I created a qr-code of my e-portflio that is meant to be the host website for the awareness course and since the bottom right looks empty, I placed the qr code there.

After that, I did some colour corrections and moving elements a bit to make the composition better. And then I was happy with my final poster.

FEEDBACK

Week 6: Mr.Fauzi said that my research and title/slogan was good and that I can continue on to make the sketches for the poster
